Sports Therapy is a branch of healthcare focussed on diagnosis and rehabilitation of injuries with a view to getting individuals back to sport in an optimal time frame. As a practitioner I would also look to be advising on future injury prevention and encouraging clients to take “pre-habilitation” steps to make sure they spend more time on the field of play rather than the treatment couch.
A typical session might comprise:
- Discussion of your injury or rehabilitation aims
- Postural and biomechanical assessment
- Development of a treatment plan
- Treatments might include range of movement exercises; functional, proprioceptive (balance) or strength
- Sports massage and associated techniques
- Kinesiology taping where appropriate.
Whilst the aim is to get people feeling fit and healthy as quickly as possible, this is always done with the priority of preventing any re-injury and the target of putting the competitor back into their chosen sport in a stronger position than they were in prior to any injury.
Sports Therapy is regulated by the Society of Sports Therapists of which I am a full member. Members are required to have reached a benchmark level of knowledge and experience through a validated qualification and must then update that annually with Continuing Professional Development. Members must also hold a valid First Aid certificate and Professional Liability Insurance and are governed by the Society’s Standards of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures.
